GETTING STARTED WITH ENGLISH LITERACY

Reading and writing in English is not easy, especially for dyslexic learners, due the irregularities in the writing system. However, taking a systematic, cumulative and multisensory approach can help all learners to put good foundations in place and later to build upon them.

In this workshop we will consider and address issues such as when and how to teach:

• the letter names and the individual sounds of English
• common spelling patterns
• blending sounds to make words

Participants will have a chance to discuss the challenges their students face and try out some activities for helping them to succeed in developing literacy in English.
